Many business owners eventually get to a place where they start to wonder whether they should hire a freelance copywriter. If you have been writing all of your own copy, it may feel strange to turn the reins over to someone else. What if that person doesn’t get your brand voice? What if you don’t like their style? These are just some of the common concerns that come up when considering hiring a freelance writer for your business. Although every business is different, there are certain times when it does make sense for just about every business to outsource their copywriting to a freelance copywriter. When are those times? When to outsource to a freelance copywriter
When you get busy: If your business is booming and you could be doing other things with your time (read: more important or money making things) rather than writing copy, it might make sense to outsource. Just because you can write, doesn’t mean you have to, especially if it isn’t one of your strong skills. Successful business owners usually get to where they are because they were wiling to outsource all the things that they were not stellar at and focus just on the tasks where they really shine.
If you’re not a great writer: This one can be hard to admit, but think about the writing you have done for you business. Is it as strong as it could be? Do you understand what makes copy persuasive? Do you know how to structure a sales letter? If not, you may consider hiring a freelance copywriter to pick up the reigns and take your business writing to a new level. Now, if you are thinking that there is no way you could teach someone enough about your business for them to write about it, you might be surprised to learn that you are in fact mistaken. (sorry, not sorry). You can find a copywriter with a niche similar to your business, and they can gather all the information they need from you (at least the good ones can!) Don’t be afraid to trust their process and allow them to dive into your business to figure out the best approach to your copy. You might even be surprised at some of the benefits that someone outside of your business will find regarding your product or service.
When you want to grow: Having a great team in place is one of the best ways to grow your business. I completely get how scary that can sound though! As entrepreneurs we often want to hold onto every aspect of our businesses, and can’t imagine anyone else being able to do as good (or, gasp, even better) a job than we do. Along the same line of reasoning as when you get busy, when you decide you want to grow your business, it is a great idea to bring on those team members who can help you before the crazy sets in. Whether that means hiring an accountant, a web designer, a graphic artist, or a freelance copywriter, having a team in place is a great way to grow your business.
