What exactly is health and wellness UX writing?
If you’ve stumbled on this page, you might already know what health and wellness UX writing is, but just in case, I’m going to start by laying out some of the basics.
First of all, a UX Writer is someone who uses design thinking to create content within a website, mobile app, or web app that will improve the user’s experience. The output of this work includes things like onboarding flows, tooltips, error messages, button copy etc…These elements are often referred to as microcopy.
Within the world of UX writing, especially freelance UX writing, there are different niches that a UX writer (also called a content designer) will work within. Someone working within health and wellness would do all the usual things that a UX writer would do, but would also have a deep understanding of health and wellness topics to better understand the audience.
As someone who worked as a certified personal trainer for many years and currently studying the science of wellbeing on a graduate level, I love getting to combine my UX writing superpowers with my passion for people living their best lives.
It is one of my greatest joys when those two worlds collide.
Choosing the right health and wellness UX writer
When it comes to choosing a UX writer for your project, it’s important that you pick someone who knows your user well. But, that’s not enough. You don’t want someone who is going to inject their own biases into the content! That’s why I always advocate for choosing a writer who also understands UX research. While many large companies have teams of UX researchers to work alongside their content team, if you’re hiring a content design/UX writing team of one, chances are you’ll be best serve by choosing someone who can also conduct and synthesize that research.
More important than whether that writer has worked on a project similar to yours, is whether they understand your project, understand and can empathize with your user, and are willing to make a hypothesis about what’s needed, but can also be flexible and let the research lead.
This person might only write about 20% of the time, but that’s a good thing! They will spend a lot of time researching, testing, and editing their work.
